Outlier AI Alternatives: Where the Work Is When Outlier Goes Quiet
By Irfan Sadek, Co-founder of AI Trainer HQ
Updated yesterday ·

Among Outlier AI alternatives, DataAnnotation suits strong English writers best, Alignerr fits language and voice specialists, Mindrift works for experts outside the US and Mercor takes licensed professionals. Expert review accounts for 63% of the 2,136 live AI-training jobs we track.
Key takeaways
- Expert review is where the open roles sit: 1,350 expert-review roles across 11 platforms on October 19, 2026; no other task type hits 300.
- Degrees rarely come up: 66% of listings (1,413 roles) never mention one, and search rating is 100% no degree, the reverse of Outlier's associate-degree floor.
- Worldwide options are rare: 3 of 11 platforms carry all 413 worldwide roles, and Mercor alone has 40% of every worldwide role.
- Pick by fit: DataAnnotation for writers, Alignerr for language and voice work, Mindrift for experts beyond the US, Mercor for licensed professionals. AI Trainer HQ is best for matching your Outlier task type to live roles before you apply.
- Apply to two or three alternatives at once, before your Outlier queue runs dry.
Outlier pays every week; the catch, many workers say, is a queue that empties between projects. Most "alternatives" lists recycle the same undated names and never show who has work in your skill. We sorted 2,136 live AI-training jobs by task type, degree mention and who can apply, then matched each Outlier track to the platforms hiring for it. Live pay, countries and payout speed sit in the table and cards below.
Why do people look for Outlier alternatives?
Most people leave because the work runs hot and cold; the pay keeps arriving. Outlier still pays weekly every Tuesday through PayPal, Airtm or ACH, and our Outlier review found no credible report of payments stopping.
The complaints are about flow. In a December 2024 r/outlier_ai thread, one poster said they finished the reduced-rate training tasks, then found the regular tasks gone and assessments marked failed that they believed they had passed. A comment from March 2025 reported about three tasks a week. The same threads show the flip side: several workers said their first two months were slow before steady project work began.
Two requirements also push people out. Contributors need at least an associate degree (Outlier FAQ), and the country list excludes Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan.
The ground has shifted too. June 2025 brought Meta's 49% stake in Scale AI, Outlier's parent (TechCrunch), and reports that Google, Scale's largest customer, planned a split (CNBC). In October 2025, Business Insider reported that Scale cut a team of generalist contractors as it moved toward expert-level training (via AOL).
Where is the work when Outlier goes quiet? We analyzed 2,136 live jobs
Expert review was the bulk of the AI-training work open on October 19, 2026: 1,350 roles, or 63% of the 2,136 live AI-training jobs we track.
How we got these numbers. Our October 19, 2026 snapshot held 2,747 live jobs across 11 platforms; our crawler re-reads each listing on the platform's own page daily. Setting aside 611 Mindrift listings for paid research sessions, which are participation studies, not AI-training work, left 2,136 live AI-training jobs. Task type is the site's own classifier label. A listing "mentions a degree" when the word appears anywhere in its title, requirements or description. Outlier and DataAnnotation hire through a single sign-up instead of listings, so neither is in the counts (methodology).
Four numbers from 2,136 live AI-training jobs across 11 platforms.
1. Expert review outweighs everything else. Next come 288 response-evaluation roles, 162 voice roles, 104 coding roles, 96 annotation roles and 89 search-rating roles, plus 47 other roles. A few categories live mostly on one platform: Welo Global has 66% of search-rating roles and 57% of annotation roles.
Open roles by task type, covering job types with 50 or more roles.
| Task type | Open roles | Busiest platforms | Never mention a degree | Open worldwide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Expert review | 1,350 expert-review roles | Meridial, Lilt, Mercor | 63% no degree | 24% of expert roles |
| Response evaluation | 288 response-evaluation roles | Lilt, Welo Global, micro1 | 65% no degree | 12% of evaluation |
| Voice recording | 162 voice roles | Meridial, Lilt, Welo Global | 77% no degree | 23% of voice roles |
| Coding | 104 coding roles | Meridial, micro1, Mercor | 62% no degree | 41% worldwide |
| Data annotation | 96 annotation roles | Welo Global, RWS TrainAI, micro1 | 66% no degree | 14% of annotation |
| Search rating | 89 search-rating roles | Welo Global, RWS TrainAI, micro1 | 100% no degree | 0% of search rating |
2. Most roles never bring up a degree. Overall, 66% skip any mention of one: 1,413 roles. Expert-review listings raise it more often than voice or search-rating listings; coding listings most often.
A listing counts as mentioning a degree when the word shows up in its title, requirements or description.
3. Worldwide roles are scarce and clustered. Of the 1,911 that say who can apply, 22% open worldwide, matching the share our hiring guide reports. Coding leads at 41% worldwide. Only 3 of 11 platforms post any worldwide role: 195 at Meridial, 166 at Mercor and 52 at Rise Data Labs.
Share of roles open worldwide, counting only those that state who can apply.
What this means for you: chase the task type you did on Outlier, not the brand. Outside the US or UK, go straight to the worldwide roles: coding and expert review at Mercor and Meridial.
Which Outlier alternative fits you?
The right alternative is the one hiring for the work you already did on Outlier. Our AI Trainer HQ Track-to-Task map converts your Outlier track into a task type, then into the platforms with live openings for it.
| Your Outlier track | Task type to target | Where the open roles are | Page alternative to try first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generalist or writing | Response evaluation, search rating | Lilt, Welo Global, RWS TrainAI | DataAnnotation |
| Languages | Voice, language expert review | Meridial, Lilt, Welo Global | Alignerr |
| Coding | Coding | Meridial, micro1, Mercor | Mercor or DataAnnotation's Coding track |
| STEM, medicine, law, finance | Expert review | Meridial, Lilt, Mercor | Mercor or Mindrift |
| Outside the US, no degree | Roles open worldwide that never mention a degree | Mercor, Meridial, Rise Data Labs | Mindrift |
Where AI Trainer HQ lands
- Best for: checking which live roles match your task type and country before you commit to an unpaid test.
- Trade-off: we run a job board rather than employing anyone, and Outlier and DataAnnotation post no listings we can track.
- Proof: 2,747 live jobs across 11 platforms, re-checked every 24 hours.
Then filter the open jobs by job type and country.

Is DataAnnotation the closest Outlier alternative?
For writing and rating work, yes: DataAnnotation runs the same sort of chatbot rating and writing tasks, and its General track skips the degree requirement.
- Best for: skilled English writers and specialists who want control over their hours.
- Trade-off: one attempt at the assessment, and rejections that arrive without a word.
- Proof: when we opened its public Generalist page on October 25, 2026, it read "No degree required," listed pay up to $50 an hour, and showed no country list. Our DataAnnotation review mentions that reports point to five English-speaking countries.

Is Alignerr a good Outlier alternative?
Alignerr suits language and voice specialists who want to see the pay rate before they apply.
- Best for: specialists and strong generalists who want pay rates posted up front.
- Trade-off: a deactivated account can wipe out what you've earned.
- Proof: 16 of its 20 roles on our board involved voice or transcription work. When we checked its public jobs page on October 25, 2026, every open role listed a rate before sign-up, and the homepage claimed an $80 average.

Is Mindrift worth trying after Outlier?
Yes, Mindrift is worth trying for experts outside the US or anyone who wants to skip the application: its FAQ says all-access tasks carry no education, experience or skill requirements.
- Best for: experts and multilingual workers outside the US.
- Trade-off: dry spells between projects.
- Proof: when we checked its homepage on October 25, 2026, it advertised $15 to $30 an hour for entry-level work and $60 to $100+ for domain experts, and every button led to a CV-and-assessment application. All-access tasks weren't on the homepage; our Mindrift review explains them. Excluding research sessions, we track 17 Mindrift roles.
Is Mercor better than Outlier for professionals?
For licensed professionals and senior specialists, Mercor has the most open work of the four alternatives: 286 roles on our board, 73% expert review.
- Best for: senior specialists and licensed professionals.
- Trade-off: a contract can end early on short notice.
- Proof: 58% of Mercor's roles are open worldwide, 40% of every worldwide role we track, and 181 of 286 listings never mention a degree.
When we checked on October 25, 2026, Mercor's public board showed pay on every card, no sign-in needed. Some pay is quoted per task, not per hour (several chemist postings listed $65 to $75 per task), and the cards don't say which countries are eligible.

How many Outlier alternatives should you apply to?
Apply to two or three Outlier alternatives that fit your task type before your queue goes quiet; reviews can take weeks.
- Match your task type. The Track-to-Task map above shows where you fit.
- Confirm who can apply. Only 22% open worldwide, so see which platforms accept your country first.
- Pair one listing platform with one sign-up platform. Mercor-style listing platforms show the exact role; sign-up platforms like DataAnnotation put you into a pool.
- Pay nothing to apply. None of the four charges workers; read how to spot a fake AI training job.

Start early: on r/outlier_ai, one commenter said DataAnnotation took six months to reply, another said a few months (thread).
What about Prolific, TELUS Digital, Stellar AI and Surge AI?
AI answers name these four too; none appears on this page's cards.
- Prolific recruits AI taskers and domain experts for paid AI-training studies on top of its research-participant platform; see our Prolific review.
- TELUS Digital lists openings for raters and annotators on its own jobs site.
- Surge AI runs DataAnnotation, so individual Surge work goes through DataAnnotation.
- Stellar AI draws praise on r/outlier_ai for its qualification-stage feedback; we have not verified its terms.
Methodology: how we chose and checked these alternatives
We took these four from our Outlier review because their work is closest to Outlier's. On October 18, 2026, we verified each platform's terms on its own pages, then rechecked the public pages on October 25, 2026. Study numbers come from our October 19, 2026 job data. Referral fees never affect the order (how we make money).
FAQ
Is there a free app like Outlier?
Yes. DataAnnotation, Alignerr, Mindrift and Mercor are free to join, and none of the four charges workers. A site that wants money for an application or a test is a scam signal.
Does Outlier AI hire everyone?
No. Getting in takes at least an associate degree, hiring spans 117 countries and territories, and Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan are excluded. Our Outlier review lists every requirement.
Is Outlier AI still paying?
Yes. Outlier's FAQ, checked October 25, 2026, says payments are processed weekly, on Tuesdays.
Which Outlier alternative is best for beginners without a degree?
Go with DataAnnotation's General track if your English writing is strong, or Mindrift's all-access tasks if you'd rather start without an application. Search-rating roles show 100% no degree in our data.
Are there companies like Outlier that hire outside the US?
Yes. Mercor operates in 107 countries, and 58% of Mercor's roles are open worldwide; Mindrift and Alignerr also take most countries, with some blocked. Run AI Trainer HQ's eligibility checker to see who accepts your country today.

What are the best sites like Outlier?
1.DataAnnotation
Legit · not rated yetDataAnnotation or Outlier?
Outlier asks every applicant for at least an associate degree, while DataAnnotation only sets degree requirements for its Coding, STEM and Professional tracks. The roughly hour-long Starter Assessment allows a single attempt; pass it and you choose your own projects, withdrawing to PayPal every few days. Remain with Outlier if you live outside the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, or want ACH or Airtm payouts.
- Who can apply: Australia, Canada, New Zealand +2 more (Outlier: Most countries).
2.Alignerr
Legit · not rated yetAlignerr or Outlier?
Alignerr states a rate on every listing, whereas Outlier reveals each project's rate before you start, and Alignerr hires generalists with no blanket degree rule. Most of its current openings are voice and transcription work aimed at people who speak languages such as Korean, Dutch and German. If you hold a degree and want three payout options, Outlier keeps the edge, since Alignerr assigns Stripe or PayPal by country.
- Median advertised pay is $26/hr.
- 15 open roles on our board today, while Outlier has none listed.
- Who can apply: Worldwide (Outlier: Most countries).
- First payment in about 5 days, faster than Outlier's 7.
3.Mindrift
Legit · not rated yetMindrift or Outlier?
Mindrift requires no degree to get started: its all-access tasks skip the application entirely, and every task displays the fixed reward up front. The expert roles posted right now mostly target physicians and engineers, each restricted to listed countries. Weekly Tuesday payouts make Outlier the better pick for degree holders; Mindrift pays twice monthly, on the 5th and 20th, via Payoneer or PayPal.
- Median advertised pay is $69/hr.
- 24 open roles on our board today, while Outlier has none listed.
4.Mercor
Legit · not rated yetMercor or Outlier?
Switch to Mercor if you hold professional credentials and want pay spelled out on every listing: openings right now lean toward expert work in science, software, finance and medicine, and none are marked entry level. Admission takes a résumé review plus a 20-minute AI interview. Stick with Outlier when an associate degree is your main credential, keeping in mind that Mercor contracts can also end early.
- Median advertised pay is $80/hr.
- 297 open roles on our board today, while Outlier has none listed.
- First payment in about 6 days, faster than Outlier's 7.
