Key takeaways
- The median AI training job on our board advertised $65 an hour; most fell between $18 and $130.

- Law tops every profession ($115/hr); language roles, the largest group, pay $36/hr.
- Weekly payouts come from Mercor, Alignerr, Outlier and Handshake AI; micro1 and Mindrift pay twice a month, and a first payout can sit on a 7-day hold.
- Match the platform to your background: 10x Team and Mercor for senior experts, micro1 and Meridial for specialists worldwide, Rise Data Labs for steady general work. AI Trainer HQ lets you compare pay and payout terms before you apply.
Most guides echo platforms' own ranges, such as Mindrift's "$15 to $100+ per hour", with no job count behind them. You can clear an unpaid test before learning what the work pays. We counted every live job on our board: the pay, how it reaches you, and five steps to your first paid task.
How does getting paid to train AI work?
AI companies pay you through platforms: as a freelance contractor, you rate, write and review the examples their models learn from, paid by the hour or by the task.
The main task types:
- Response evaluation: weigh two chatbot answers and explain which wins.
- Data annotation: tag text, images or audio.
- Search quality rating: decide whether results fit the query.
- Voice recording: capture conversations or read a script.
- Coding: write, fix and grade model-written code.
- Expert review: a nurse, lawyer or scientist vets answers in their specialty.

How much do AI training jobs pay? We analyzed 1,507 live listings
On 19 October 2026, the median AI training job on our board advertised $65 an hour, and most paid between $18 and $130.
How we ran the numbers. We pulled every live job on AI Trainer HQ on 19 October 2026 and set aside 611 paid research-session listings from Mindrift, mostly a single in-person consumer study in New York posted once per language at $100 an hour, as they are not AI-training work. That left 2,136 live AI-training jobs from 11 platforms; the 1,507 jobs that state pay (71%) form the base. We converted each job's advertised range to a midpoint in US dollars per hour, then took the median and the 10th to 90th percentile, and report only groups with 50 or more paying jobs (methodology).

Of paying listings, 57% come in at $60 an hour or higher and 10% below $20.
Task type sets the rate. We call this the AI Trainer HQ Pay Ladder: each rung is a kind of work, and every step up demands more skill.
| Task (rung) | Median | Typical range (10th–90th) | Paying jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search quality rating | $8/hr | $4–23 | 53 |
| Data annotation | $18/hr | $6–40 | 77 |
| Voice recording | $36/hr | $26–75 | 104 |
| Response evaluation | $45/hr | $8–110 | 138 |
| Coding | $65/hr | $30–110 | 102 |
| Expert (SME) review | $65/hr | $35–146 | 994 |
The AI Trainer HQ Pay Ladder: general work pays a median of $28/hr; coding and expert review pay 2.3× that.
Your profession sets your rung. Among professions with 50 or more paying jobs, law paid best at $115/hr, followed by finance, medicine, software engineering and science. Language and translation work made up the biggest group (568 language jobs) and paid the least, at $36/hr.
Median advertised pay across professions with at least 50 paying jobs: law, finance, medicine, software engineering, science, languages.
What this means for you: the work you qualify for shapes your rate more than the platform does, and a degree, licence or coding skill is what moves you higher.

| micro1 | $72/hr | $17–175 | 262 | Experts outside the US | A passed AI interview guarantees no project |
| Meridial | $65/hr | $36–65 | 540 | Language and field specialists | 59% of Meridial roles pay exactly $65 |
| Rise Data Labs | $30/hr | $30–35 | 63 | Steady general work | Narrow pay band |
| Welo Global | $18/hr | $4–36 | 175 | Multilingual raters | Lowest median of the six |

Of our paying listings, 1,501 state an hourly rate and 6 a yearly salary; we convert everything to US dollars per hour. The hourly tag can mislead: some micro1 listings pay per approved task. Before any test, confirm the payout method works where you live; our eligibility checker shows which platforms accept your country and how each pays.
How long until your first payment?
Expect weeks from application to money in your account, because four stages stack up, each on the platform's timeline:
The first payment takes weeks: four stages pile up before the money lands.
- Pass the test. You clear assessments and AI interviews first (how to become an AI trainer).
- Get through onboarding. Handshake AI usually leaves it unpaid; Outlier may pay less.
- Work one full pay cycle. On twice-monthly platforms, the deposit can land about three weeks after your first task.
- Wait out the first-payout hold. Stripe keeps the first Mercor and Alignerr payout locked for 7 days.
How much can you realistically earn in a week?
Your weekly total is the advertised rate times the hours a project gives you, which can fall to zero between projects. In our data, 10 hours of response evaluation at the median rate pays $450 before tax, while 10 hours of legal review at the law median pays $1,150. Neither is guaranteed, so steady earners keep two or three accounts going.
How to get your first paid task in 5 steps
- Pick your rung on the ladder. Without a degree, start with response evaluation, voice or annotation; entry-level jobs lists them. With a profession, go to its hub.
- Check your country. Prolific accepts 52 countries, Outlier 117 and Mercor 107; Handshake AI is US-only, and Kenya is missing from Outlier, Mindrift, Mercor and Prolific.
- Apply to two or three platforms that state pay. Filter every live AI training job by profession and country, then sort by pay.
- Pass the test. DataAnnotation gives one attempt at a starter assessment of about an hour; Mercor and micro1 use a recorded AI interview of about 20 to 40 minutes.
- Set up payouts and keep records. Connect the assigned payout account and log every payment.

Do you pay tax on AI training income?
Yes, in most cases: platforms classify you as a contractor, so earnings count as self-employment income. US workers may receive a Form 1099 (IRS self-employed tax center); in the UK, income above HMRC's £1,000 trading allowance typically requires Self Assessment (GOV.UK). Treat this as general information, not tax advice.
