Jobs Like DataAnnotation: 5 Alternatives, Picked by Fit
By Rez Karim, Co-founder of AI Trainer HQ
Updated yesterday ·

Outlier, Alignerr, Mindrift, Prolific and Mercor offer the best jobs like DataAnnotation, and the right one depends on your country, your degree and the way in. Of 2,136 live AI-training jobs we tracked, 73% accepted applicants beyond DataAnnotation's five reported countries.
Key takeaways
- Of the 2,136 roles we counted on October 19, 2026, 1,549 jobs were open to people outside the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the five countries DataAnnotation reportedly accepts.
- Location is easier to get past than inexperience: 74% of those roles named no degree, but only 5% (77 entry-level jobs) were entry level.
- Language work makes up 57% of what's open outside the five, and Meridial, Lilt and Welo Global posted 1,079 roles of those.
- Kenya comes off worst (252 open roles), and four of the five alternatives, Outlier, Mindrift, Prolific and Mercor, exclude it.
- Pick by fit: Outlier for degree holders in its 117 countries, Alignerr to see the rate before applying, Mindrift to start without a test, Prolific for short studies, Mercor for credentialed experts. Check AI Trainer HQ first for the live roles that accept your country.
DataAnnotation gives you one Starter Assessment and one shot, and some applicants never hear back. Most "sites like DataAnnotation" roundups label the alternatives open worldwide without counting anything. So we counted who can apply to each live job we track and chose five alternatives by country, degree and way in. Live pay and a head-to-head note on each are in the table and cards below.
What are jobs like DataAnnotation?
Jobs like DataAnnotation pay contractors to judge, write and verify AI responses, check code, or record and review language data, usually as freelance tasks taken from a dashboard or applied for one listing at a time. The titles you'll see most:
- Response rater: compares two chatbot replies, picks the better one and explains why.
- Prompt writer: writes questions plus model answers.
- Coding reviewer: reviews AI-written code.
- Language or voice specialist: writes, translates or records in one language.
- Search rater: judges whether results match a query.
- Expert reviewer: scores responses in a field such as medicine or law.
Every type has live openings on the AI Trainer HQ job board.
Why do people look for a DataAnnotation alternative?
Three reasons drive most people to an alternative: the one-attempt Starter Assessment never got a reply, the dashboard stopped showing work, or they live outside the countries DataAnnotation is reported to accept.
- No reply. The assessment takes about an hour and allows one attempt. DataAnnotation says approved applicants hear back by email within a few days and that it can't respond to everyone (DataAnnotation FAQ). A second platform gives you work while you wait.
- A quiet dashboard. Projects come and go with no promise of steady work, so a second account fills the gaps.
- Country. DataAnnotation doesn't publish an official country list; reports point to the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Which DataAnnotation alternative fits you?
Outlier suits degree holders in its 117 countries, Alignerr suits people who want the rate shown before applying, Mindrift suits anyone starting without a test, Prolific covers short paid studies, and Mercor suits credentialed experts.
| Platform | Best for | Way in | Degree | Can't apply from | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outlier | Degree holders who want occasional, flexible tasks | Résumé, skill screenings, ID and location check, project qualification | Associate degree minimum | Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan | Work can dry up between projects |
| Alignerr | Seeing the rate before you apply | Google sign-up, résumé, apply per job, Persona ID; some jobs add a Zara AI interview or a domain test | Some roles only | Unnamed countries (a "Location Denied" error) | Pay for finished work can be withheld after a failed deactivation appeal |
| Mindrift | Starting without a test | All-access tasks need no application; expert projects need a CV, assessments and ID | Specialised projects only | Kenya, Switzerland, Taiwan, sanctioned countries such as China, Russia, Iran | Passing the assessments doesn't guarantee a project |
| Prolific | Short paid studies around another job | Waitlist, Onfido ID check, AI Task Assessment for AI studies | None for studies | Outside its 52 countries, incl. Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines | Most new sign-ups wait for an invite |
| Mercor | Credentialed experts | Résumé, an AI interview of about 20 minutes, the listing's assessment | Set by each listing | Kenya, Pakistan, China, Russia | Projects can end early |
Outlier
Go with Outlier if you hold at least an associate degree and live in one of the 117 countries and territories on its working-location list; India and the Philippines are on it.
Alignerr
Choose Alignerr if you want the pay rate on the listing before you apply (Alignerr). At our October 25, 2026 check, it restricted access in some countries without naming them; a "Location Denied" message at login is how you find out (Alignerr help). It's the only one of the five that doesn't name Kenya as excluded.
Alignerr's help centre explains the block but names no countries (checked October 25, 2026).
Mindrift
Mindrift is the pick to begin today: its all-access tasks skip the application and ask for no education or experience (Mindrift FAQ). Some projects still require a specific country or language (eligibility).
Prolific
Prolific fits if you want short studies with the pay displayed upfront; each study must pay at least £6 or $8 an hour (Prolific).
Mercor
Mercor works if you have credentials and live outside the five countries: 70% of the 286 Mercor listings we tracked were open to applicants there. It listed 0 beginner roles among them, so it suits experienced professionals.
If DataAnnotation won't take you, where can you apply? We counted 2,136 jobs
Of the 2,136 live AI-training jobs we tracked on October 19, 2026, 73% accepted someone outside DataAnnotation's five reported countries. Among listings that state who can apply, the share rises to 81%.
Method. Our snapshot covers every live job in the AI Trainer HQ database on October 19, 2026, across 11 platforms, minus 611 Mindrift listings for paid research sessions, which aren't AI-training work. A job counts as open beyond the five when it accepts applicants worldwide or names another eligible country. A platform needs 50 or more listings to be reported on its own.
The rest: 362 jobs limited to those five countries, and 225 listings that stated no eligibility.
1. Language-data platforms shut the fewest people out. Lilt (94%), RWS TrainAI (90%) and Meridial (83%) put most of their jobs within reach outside the five. micro1 lands at 1% because most of its listings never say who can apply.
Only platforms with 50 or more live jobs on October 19, 2026.
2. Of the five alternatives above, only Mercor posts enough listings to measure. We counted 20 Alignerr listings and 17 Mindrift listings, too few to report alone, and zero from Outlier or Prolific, which publish no listings we can track.
3. Your country reshapes the count. Mercor shuts out both Kenya and Pakistan.
| Where you live | Live jobs open to you |
|---|---|
| India | 660 open roles |
| The Philippines | 463 open roles |
| Nigeria | 417 open roles |
| Pakistan | 255 open roles |
| Kenya | 252 open roles |
Platform-wide country exclusions already factored in.
Select your country to see which platforms accept you and how many of their roles are open to you.
Where AI Trainer HQ lands
- Best for: AI Trainer HQ is best for checking which live AI-training roles accept your country before you spend time on an unpaid test.
- Trade-off: we list jobs rather than hire anyone, and platforms that publish no listings (Outlier, Prolific, DataAnnotation) never show up in our counts.
- Proof: 2,136 live AI-training jobs across 11 platforms, each checked at the source every 24 hours.
What this means for you: from Kenya, four of the five alternatives above won't take you, so try Alignerr or the language platforms, which posted almost all of the open roles there. From Pakistan, Outlier, Mercor and Prolific are closed while Mindrift accepts you. Browse the live lists for AI training jobs in India and in the Philippines.
Can you get a job like DataAnnotation without a degree or experience?
Skipping the degree often works; skipping experience rarely does. 74% of the jobs open outside the five countries named no degree (1,149 roles), yet only 77 entry-level jobs were open to beginners there, most of them from Meridial (43 beginner roles) and RWS TrainAI (27 entry-level listings).
Among the five alternatives, Mindrift's all-access tasks are the clearest no-test start, and some Alignerr roles ask for no experience.
Pick your country plus No experience needed to see the beginner roles open to you.
In the Philippines, that filter shows 16 entry-level roles. Read who AI training jobs hire or browse entry-level AI training jobs.
How do you pick? Use the Country, Degree, Door check
The AI Trainer HQ Country, Degree, Door check asks three questions in order: where you live, whether you hold a degree, and which way in you can pass.
- Country. Cross off every platform that excludes where you live. Kenya crosses off all but Alignerr, which doesn't name it; Pakistan crosses off Outlier, Mercor and Prolific.
- Degree. No degree removes Outlier; a professional credential points to Mercor.
- Door. Pick the entry route you can clear: open tasks (Mindrift), a listing with the rate shown (Alignerr), a waitlist and short studies (Prolific), an AI interview (Mercor) or skill screenings (Outlier).
Country, Degree, Door: knock platforms out in that order.
Apply to two that clear all three, so one dead queue doesn't cut off your income.
Check your country first. Choose where you live and your profession in the eligibility checker to see which platforms accept you and which live jobs are open to you.
What should you check before you apply?
Before you sign up, check three things: the platform takes your country, its payout method works where you live, and you hold an ID from your country of residence.
- Payout: Mindrift and Alignerr each assign one payout provider by country.
- ID and phone: Outlier requires a valid ID and a mobile number from your country of residence, and bans VPNs.
- No fees: DataAnnotation, Outlier and Mindrift each state they never charge you. See how to spot a fake AI training job.
How we picked and counted
These five are the platforms AI Trainer HQ lists for DataAnnotation, because they pay for the same work: rating, writing and checking AI output. On October 18, 2026, we verified each one's countries, way in and requirements on its own pages, and rechecked Alignerr's help centre on October 25, 2026.
The counts have caveats: they capture a single day, they apply each listing's stated country rule rather than the platform's final decision, and platforms that publish no listings are left out. Referral fees never affect the order (disclosure); our methodology has the full process.
FAQ
Can I work for DataAnnotation and another platform at the same time?
Each platform takes you on as an independent contractor, so holding two accounts is common. Review each confidentiality agreement and keep each platform's projects separate.
Which DataAnnotation alternative is best for beginners?
Mindrift: its all-access tasks require no application, education or experience. Beginner openings are rare everywhere: only 5% of the jobs available outside DataAnnotation's countries were entry level.
Which DataAnnotation alternatives accept people outside the US?
All five. Outlier accepts people in 117 countries and territories, Mercor in 107 and Prolific in 52, while Alignerr and Mindrift take most countries.
Can I retake the DataAnnotation Starter Assessment?
No. DataAnnotation gives you one shot. Mercor's AI interview allows up to three retakes, but each one resets your application.
Which DataAnnotation alternative pays the most?
The role drives pay more than the platform does. See live pay in the table below and pay by role in what AI training jobs pay.
Is DataAnnotation a technical job?
Not on the General track, which calls for strong English writing, research and fact-checking. The Coding, STEM and Professional tracks require a degree or professional experience.

What are the best sites like DataAnnotation?
1.Outlier
Legit · not rated yetOutlier or DataAnnotation?
Outlier is the better pick when you live outside DataAnnotation's reported core countries: it accepts workers in 117 eligible countries and territories, and weekly pay lands every Tuesday through PayPal, Airtm or ACH instead of PayPal alone. The trade-off is an associate degree minimum for everyone. Hold no degree, or prefer to cash out on your own schedule? DataAnnotation's one-shot Starter Assessment is the path that fits.
- Who can apply: Most countries (DataAnnotation: Australia, Canada, New Zealand +2 more).
2.Alignerr
Legit · not rated yetAlignerr or DataAnnotation?
Alignerr is worth choosing if you want a rate in front of you before committing: one appears on every listing, and you apply job by job, sometimes through a Zara AI interview or a domain assessment. Applicants are accepted worldwide, though some countries are blocked. Stick with DataAnnotation if you'd rather pass a single assessment and then hand-pick projects, and be aware that Alignerr can withhold pay for completed work after a deactivation.
- Median advertised pay is $26/hr.
- 15 open roles on our board today, while DataAnnotation has none listed.
- Who can apply: Worldwide (DataAnnotation: Australia, Canada, New Zealand +2 more).
- First payment in about 5 days, faster than DataAnnotation's 7.
3.Mindrift
Legit · not rated yetMindrift or DataAnnotation?
Mindrift lets you begin without sitting a test, since its all-access tasks need no application, and it operates in most countries beyond a restricted list that includes China, Russia, Iran and Kenya. The expert listings it currently runs lean toward physicians and engineers. Writers in DataAnnotation's reported English-speaking countries fit better there if they want PayPal withdrawals every few days rather than Mindrift's 5th-and-20th payouts.
- Median advertised pay is $69/hr.
- 24 open roles on our board today, while DataAnnotation has none listed.
- Who can apply: Most countries (DataAnnotation: Australia, Canada, New Zealand +2 more).
4.Prolific
Legit · not rated yetProlific or DataAnnotation?
Prolific works one study at a time: you sign up for a waitlist, verify ID through Onfido, then take studies as researchers post them, with an assessment unlocking AI tasks. Coverage spans 52 countries, and cash-outs hit PayPal within 24 hours. Studies show up irregularly, though, so go with DataAnnotation if you prefer picking from a dashboard of projects and can pass its single Starter Assessment.
- Who can apply: Australia, Brazil, Canada +12 more (DataAnnotation: Australia, Canada, New Zealand +2 more).
- First payment in about 1 day, faster than DataAnnotation's 7.
5.Mercor
Legit · not rated yetMercor or DataAnnotation?
Mercor targets credentialed experts: you upload a résumé, sit a 20-minute AI interview plus whatever assessment a listing requires, and most current roles are expert work in science, software, finance and medicine, with none marked entry level. The platform runs in 107 countries and pays weekly through Stripe or Wise. Strong writers without specialist credentials will find DataAnnotation's General track a better fit.
- Median advertised pay is $80/hr.
- 297 open roles on our board today, while DataAnnotation has none listed.
- Who can apply: Most countries (DataAnnotation: Australia, Canada, New Zealand +2 more).
- First payment in about 6 days, faster than DataAnnotation's 7.
